Having difficulty with reading and doing close-up work caused by long-sightedness (presbyopia) is usually a big problem for most individuals aged forty-plus. So the humble ready-reader makes a very important, low-cost contribution to helping many to do their work and carry out everyday tasks.
The African Clearsite Partnership together with CHAM (Christian Health Association of Malawi) are making thousands of ready-reader glasses available to health services in Malawi, and Embangweni Mission Hospital Eye Clinic has been chosen as one of the principal dispensing centres for this programme owing to its well-equipped hospital clinic, established community eye health services and committed staff.

Since this year’s programme started in March 2026 (after the rainy season), the clinicians at Embangweni have dispensed over 5,000 of these ready-readers through community outreach visits to remote clinics and schools.

During the visits, local people including schoolchildren are invited to take eye health tests. Staff, supported by trained community workers and volunteers, screen in addition for other eye conditions (infections, injuries, cataracts, etc) and will provide treatment or make referrals as appropriate.

The staff at Embangweni are very encouraged that they have been chosen to participate in this scheme, and report that it has “boosted our morale and eagerness to work”. The programme is ongoing.
