A few days ago Mirriam Nyirenda, ophthalmic clinical officer at Embangweni Mission Hospital, reported that a newborn baby had just been referred to them, born with eyelids turned inside-out (congenital ectropion). The baby needed urgent assessment by a occuloplastic surgeon, the nearest of which would be at Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe, 275km away.
Accordingly, with funds supplied by Focus on Malawi and on-the-ground help from Bananabox Plus and Ben Mhango, the clinic arranged for urgent transport for the baby. Accompanied to Kamuzu Central Hospital by its mother, grandmother, and a clinician from Embangweni Hospital, the baby is now awaiting an examination by the doctor. Our thanks to Ben who did the driving at short notice.
